RE: newmar fiver frames

I have pictures of their frames being built. Took a tour in 2004 and had an opportunity to snaps some pictures in the frame shop. Confirms that they do make their own and they are well built. Casey

RE: tire inflation pressure

Lots of verbal advice out there from reps, engineers, tire salesmen etc. Everyone makes their own decisions; I make mine according to written recommendations by the manufacturer whenever possible. The following is in writing from the Michelin website and that is what I go by. The OP asked for opinions, he's got plenty of 'em. :h "Load and Inflation Tables for RV Useage Only: XPS RIBĀ® In the load and inflation tables, SINGLE means an axle with one tire mounted on each end, while DUAL means an axle with two tires mounted on each end. The loads indicated represent the total weight of an axle end, in an RV application. When one axle end weighs more than the other, use the heaviest of the two end weights to determine the unique tire pressure for all tires on the axle. The maximum cold air pressure for each axle may vary, depending on their weights. These tables are applicable for all RV axles, whether or not they are power-driven."

RE: Dual pane window question

Got 'em. Like 'em. Would get 'em again. Trailer is five years old. Not one problem.

RE: Brake Controler?

BrakeSmart. Would probably buy the Maxbrake. Did the install myself as well as two for friends but I am a licensed truck mechanic. Not really difficult but if you are not comfortable with the hydaulic portion then have a mechanic install the transducer component. Will take about fifteem minutes tops. The rest is no more difficult than any other controller. I have used a lot of brake controllers but so far, the BrakeSmart is simply the best, especially if you have a lot of trailer. The Maxbrake works on the same principle so should be the same. Check out Ken Lenger's Website regarding his installation on a Dodge pickup. Casey

RE: Good looking 5th wheel setup

Actually that is my rig on its way to be delivered to me. It's a surprise for my wife. :B

RE: tire inflation pressure

Lots of opinions on this one but tire manufacturers publish load/inflation tables for a reason. I highly recommend using them. Under inflated tires run hot and wear faster and often suffer premature failure. Overinflated tires are more susceptable to damage from road hazards and will wear more in the centre of the tread. (Think of a balloon inflated hard; it is far easier to break than a balloon that is softer) The pressure branded into the sidewall is the MAXIMUM pressure required to achieve the rated load for that particular tire. It is not necessarily the recommended pressure, although in many cases this is the case as manufacturers often put on tires that are just barely adequate for the load. And THAT is my opinion. :B Casey

RE: Yukon Legend Campfire - Low Flame

Thinking of buying a Yukon Legend. Would you buy another. Seems well made from what I can see on the website and a reasonable burn time for a 20 pounder. Casey

RE: Air Compressor

Just ordered a Viair 400P-RV kit from J.C.Whitney. The compressor in the kit runs off 12 volt quarter horse motor (30 amps directly from the battery) and inflates tires quickly and has 60 feet of hose to easily reach the furthest tire from the front of the tow vehicle. I have heard so much good reviews about the Viair compressors that I finally bit the bullet. I have had it with the anemic compressor I have been using for the past three years that takes forever to get to 65 psi.

RE: General load range "E" tires

This spring I replaced all the Generals on our 2004 trailer (bought in September 2003) with Michelin XPS Ribs. Glad I did. I was going to wait until next spring but the sidewalls developed cracks I was not comfortable with. The two grand it cost me for a set of tires was probably less than the potential damage caused by a tire coming apart; as well as the inconvenience of a failure on a trip. Inspection of the DOT data on the sidewalls of the Michelins indicate that all were made within six months of installation. I am good to go for another five. Casey

RE: Qustions for Pull-rite Superglide Owners

1. If you lower the jacks so they are firmly on the ground you risk lifting the king pin flange into the latch, thereby damaging the latch mechanism. This applies to most hitches. I usually extend them until the truck starts to lift on the suspension. They are just being super cautious here. 2. I just lay my electrical cable in the back of the truck behind the hitch. Just place it so the handle or any other moving part isn't likely to catch and tear the cable. 3. Left my emergency brake cable as is. Same rules apply to positioning it as the electrical cable. 4. I think they are being extra cautious here as well. I think as long as there is a thin coating, that is all that is needed. I doubt you would need to repeat it during a day's driving. Casey

RE: Used Pullrite Super Glide hitch

Check the Pullrite website to be sure the super rail kit fits your truck. Also look at the way tubes to make sure there is no excessive galling of the rail surfaces. Apart from that, check for any damage and proper functioning of the hitch latch. Others will probably chime in.

RE: Braking Help needed

Please put a description of your rig in your signature to help us figure out your problem. Depending on the age of your truck, the RV receptacle on the truck my be corroded inside. I have had that experience with a couple of tow vehicles that I have had. It sounds like an electrical connection problem and it could be anywhere between the controller and the trailer magnet. Start by checking the most common trouble spots first and the tow vehicle connector is a good place to start.

RE: RV Licence Endorsement in British Columbia

Ontario requires a Class A drivers license if the trailer (axle weight) exceeds 4600 kilos or 10,141 pounds. See Ontario License Info for RVrs. Ontario license requirments apply to all Ontario drivers no matter where they drive. A BC driver would need to adhere to BC requirments while in Ontario.

RE: Trailer Rake / pin box height

The closer to level the better. If you have the bed clearance, adjust the pinbox. Doesn't take that long and it will be easier on the axles.

RE: New 5th Wheel - weight question

I have to agree. You need to reweigh the rig. Even my Dodge diesel front axle with my fiver hooked up only comes to 4500 pounds and this axle is rated at 4700. Your rear weight is definitely wrong as well. Your numbers just don't make sense.. Reweigh it. Casey

RE: Sealand Toilet

I just checked mine and found the seal slightly off center. Loosened the band clamp, recentered the bowl over the seal and tightened the clamp. Will let it sit there til tomorrow. Will know by then if that did the trick. If not, lifting the pedal will continue as standard practice. I guess I can always get the redesigned seal if I grow tired of that. Casey

RE: Sealand Toilet

We found out that a quick lift on the pedal after flushing will seal the water in. Only took me ten years to figure it out. That is what I found out but it only took me a year. :B I cleaned the seals and sprayed it with silicone. Each time the fix only lasted a week. A quick lift on the pedal with your foot is all it takes. Casey

RE: propane running

I run with mine off. I know that is tantamount to heresy for some but too easy to forget to shut down while refueling. To me an open flame in a gas station is just too risky, albeit the risk is small. Just my way of doing things and the reefer stays cold for 10 hours if you leave the door shut.
